The North Star Today

The North Star includes human interest and feature stories on the people, places, institutions and examples of change in the area in and around Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. One satisfied reader said, “Surely The North Star presents the best of Vermont life.” Another reader often compares the North Star Monthly to Vermont Life Magazine. As a matter of fact we were honored to have Tom Slayton, editor of Vermont Life Magazine, read one of our favorite front-page stories, “We Didn’t Celebrate Christmas Because My Father Didn’t Believe in all That Stuff” on Vermont Public Radio in December.

The North Star has regular columns including Follow the Money (light-hearted insights into current financial and economic news); Up on the Farm Early (reflections on growing up on the farm); No Small Potatoes (fine cooking with Vanna Guldenschuh); and Walden Hill Journal (an account of the changing seasons on this edge of New England).

Above all, The North Star offers the stories we all have to tell. These are real people telling real stories. The common thread that binds them seems to be excellence in its many definitions.

We’d like you to see a copy, and we’d be interested in your ideas for articles. Please let us hear from you.

Best of Vermont life

I enjoy the paper immensely and wouldn’t want to be without it.

Just what the doctor ordered for Vermont lovers.

I very much do want another year of your terrific paper - I  thank you! My favorite stories are of the “old timers-old ways,” particularly those about farming. What rugged individuals settled this area! Also the story about the Jenks family, the fellow who wrote about the Sunday drives his dad took the family on (my dad did the same, with six children and always a mystery destination) and the one about the history of the Fairbanks mill site  - such rich local color and history. Keep up the fine effort. It is a pleasure to read every page.

The North Star keeps me in touch with the part of Vermont that is very special to me. Keep it going.

The North Star improves with every issue – if that’s possible. It seems perfect already.
